I signed up to bring goodies for Jack's Valentine's Day party at school. So I chose {from Pinterest of course} these strawberry "oreo" heart cookies and heart shaped whoopie pies similar to these only modified to use a red velvet boxed cake mix with this recipe and this filling. Which I may have eaten with a spoon straight out of the bowl...I'm just sayin'.
I piped the cake mix into heart shapes and baked.
[Sorry about the inadequate iPhone pics in this post. My good Nikon decided to take a trip to California with my husband and rode all the way out there and back and never once left his backpack. It was so sad when it got back home that it didn't get to see any sights.]
Once they cooled, I piped the filling onto the center and smooshed them together. They are oh-so-messy but ooey, gooey goodness!
I made the strawberry cookies just like the recipe, only omitted the filling 'cause I got lazy and ran out of time. They still tasted yummy! Good strawberry flavor and a little bit salty, just like I like my cookies.
Then the kids and I made heart shaped candy canes {because we had left overs from Christmas}.
Shape two mini canes into hearts and bake at 240 for 2-4 minutes, smoosh the ends together and voila!
Again, I got the idea for the kids' Valentine's cards from Pinterest. Seriously, what did we do without Pinterest? Oh yeah, we had more time in our lives, but were far less crafty. I took the photos then did the graphics on Picnik.com {which is going to Google+ in April}. Because they are moving, they made all of the upgraded features free from now until April. Perfect timing for me!
Printed them at Kinko's {or is it FedEx now?}. Then cut the slits for lollipops through the tops and bottoms of their hands. Jack and Paige were both so impressed with the final outcome, even though they probably thought I was crazy momma at the time.
One sidenote: This is not a great project for little kids. Jack was old enough to take direction about how to hold his hand. But Paige held this pose for half of a split second, then was totally uninterested in performing for me. Lucky for me, she looked like a perfect angel for that split second and I got the shot on the first try. But had I not, this could have been a total bomb!
I've enjoyed seeing other creative ideas from Pinteresting mommas pop up on Facebook and blogs recently. Really, what did we do without Pinterest?
Taken from the inspiration of my blog post title, I'll leave you with this blooper from The Newlywed Game circa 1970-something {watch out it's for mature audiences and those that don't mind crude subject matter}:
Happy Valentine's Day to all my loves!

So cute!! Love the lollypop valentines, they turned out perfect!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was little and when you were little, valentines that were prepared for school were purchased at the grocery or drug store, punched out and put into envelopes. Momma you have come a long way from store bought valentines.
ReplyDelete@Yenna - Out all of Jack and Paige's Valentine's that they received those types of Valentine's were still 99% of them. Truly though, the ones I did were no more expensive and maybe only slightly more time consuming to do the graphics and printing. Even still they were very simple.
